This award is given to students participating in the AVID program at DGS and DGN who have exceeded expectations. AVID is a national program whose mission is “to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.”
Awarded to DGS and DGN for anti-bullying programs. These programs have included North High PRISM buttons, North High "The Respect Project", South High anti-bullying event, and "Safe Zone" classroom stickers. Funds are donated by Tomlinson Holman, former DGN graduate and Alumni Award of Excellence recipient in 2003.
Funds are donated in memory of George B. Pappas was a former English teacher and department chair at North High from 1952-1984 at North High. Mr. Pappas was known as a person who brought enthusiasm and energy to the classroom - many remember him as “Mr. Spirit Sparker." His focus was on students and their education.
In 1999, scholarships and foundation gifts were established for those students of North High School who plan to pursue a career in English, Speech, Journalism or related fields and exemplify the qualities of George Pappas.
The Foundation does not manage this scholarship. The Foundation only distributes the funds for these scholarships.
A $500 scholarship is awarded to one outstanding student from DGS and DGN each year in the World Languages Department. Funds are donated by the family of Barbara Pawlowski, former Spanish teacher at DGS.
